World Health Organization defines mental health as the state of a person’s well-being on how they realize personal abilities, cope with the everyday stresses of life, and contribute to the surrounding community. While this is a common problem worldwide, mental health disorders, such as depression and anxiety, are twice as high in an emergency and humanitarian setting and more common in women than men.

Since 2017 Caritas Czech Republic has been helping returnees, IDPs, host communities, and refugees to restart their lives shattered by ISIS and years of conflict. UNDP support elevated Caritas' commitment to helping the most vulnerable with the most significant project ever to rebuild the local infrastructure and provide young men and women with employment opportunities. Caritas Czech Republic distributes shelter kits & repairs shelters for vulnerable families in Duhok

Tens of thousands of people fled Mosul and Sinjar and moved to Duhok where they have no roof over their heads. On May 19th, the team of Caritas Czech Republic in Iraq visited the project site in Duhok, where they distributed 35 shelter kits and signed contracts with 10 families for emergency shelter repair.

Even before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, Iraq was struggling with the consequences of many years of armed conflict. Millions of Iraqis have had to flee their homes because of the fighting, and hundreds of thousands are still internally displaced across Iraq. Those who have returned to their homes often do not have access to basic services and have difficulty finding a source of livelihood. The coronavirus pandemic has further exacerbated the crisis, affecting many Iraqis who have had to close their businesses or lost their jobs.
