After 10 successful years in Iraq, Caritas Czech Republic is closing its operations in the country

​Caritas Czech Republic has been active in Iraq since 2015, initially providing immediate humanitarian aid in response to the crises caused by prolonged armed conflicts, notably the invasion by ISIS, which displaced millions of Iraqis. Over time, our focus has shifted towards more sustainable forms of assistance, aiming to help individuals rebuild their livelihoods and create new employment opportunities.

In the heart of Karakosh, a city scarred by war yet rich in culture, 25-year-old Valentina finds strength in painting. Her art captures the history, traditions, and resilience of her homeland in Iraq, and gives a voice to the people and places that have endured hardship. Thanks to the support of Caritas Czech Republic, she has been able to improve her skills, acquire the necessary tools, and pursue her passion while teaching others to do the same.

Did you know that militaries are responsible for 5.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions? Wars and conflicts not only have a devastating impact on people's lives, but also negatively affect the environment and contribute significantly to climate change. By the Ukraine war’s third year, total war-related emissions generated are roughly equal to the annual emissions of several mid-sized European countries combined. In Gaza, the destruction of ecosystems is being referred to as ecocide and a war crime. In the future, the reconstruction of post-war areas will also present a problem.
