What we do

We help where we are needed. We provide immediate humanitarian aid to people affected by war or natural disaster. As part of our development cooperation, we help people to cut loose and make a living. We focus on the development of health care and social protection as well as  rural development and environmental protection and actively work on systemic changes in Iraq.

Mujahed from Iraq reopened his workshop thanks to Caritas Czech Republic

Mujahed is a carpenter who worked in his workshop for fifteen years before he had to flee to Baghdad with his family because of the so-called Islamic state. After returning, he found his workshop destroyed, but thanks to Caritas Czech Republic, he was able to reopen it. Now he can provide for his family and even support other people in need by creating work opportunities.

Apart from being the most fertile area in Iraq, the Nineveh province in the north of the country is also known for being the historic homeland of one of the oldest Christian communities. In 2014, many of its members fled their homes in fear of persecution by the self-proclaimed Islamic State. Some returned in 2017, only to find their towns and businesses devastated. Caritas Czech Republic helps them relaunch their old businesses and find new ways to provide for themselves.

The Nineveh plains in northern Iraq are called the breadbasket of the country. When in 2014 the self-proclaimed Islamic State occupied the region, it seized and destroyed land, seeds, grains, crops, and equipment from local farmers, who had to flee their homes. After the defeat of the jihadist group, many of them have succeeded in reviving their farms with the support of Caritas Czech Republic.
