Through art, I keep my city's history alive, says Valentina, a painter from Iraq

In the heart of Karakosh, a city scarred by war yet rich in culture, 25-year-old Valentina finds strength in painting. Her art captures the history, traditions, and resilience of her homeland in Iraq, and gives a voice to the people and places that have endured hardship. Thanks to the support of Caritas Czech Republic, she has been able to improve her skills, acquire the necessary tools, and pursue her passion while teaching others to do the same.

In a welcoming home in Bartella, Iraq, 26-year-old Massara carefully crafts traditional Iraqi jewellery and handbags, bead by bead. Like many in her community, Massara’s life was disrupted by the ISIS invasion, forcing her to flee to Erbil. Yet, her determination to support her family and preserve her heritage brought her back to Bartella, where she has built a successful handmade goods business with the help of Caritas Czech Republic.

25-year-old Mollar owns thriving bistro in Karakosh, Iraq

The scent of Lahm Bi Ajeen—spiced meat and vegetables spread over soft dough—and freshly baked pizza draws locals and visitors alike to a small bistro on a lively street. Inside, 25-year-old Mollar works with steady hands, rolling out dough with care, topping it generously, and sliding it into a glowing oven. With the support of Caritas Czech Republic, Mollar was able to open his own bistro in Karakosh, Iraq.

As the sun begins to set in the small Christian town of Karamles in Iraq, a familiar aroma fills the air. It is the scent of freshly made shawarma, burgers, and Lahm b-Ajeen, drawing customers from near and far. At the heart of this bustling little spot is Rana, a mother of four and the proud owner of a bistro that sits next to the local monastery.

She had to start from scratch. Today, Iqbal from Iraq is a successful seamstress

This year marks 10 years since the invasion of Iraq by the self-proclaimed Islamic State, which forced millions of Iraqis to flee their homes. The same fate met Iqbal, who fled from Karakosh to Erbil to escape ISIS. To support her big family, she began creating handmade products. Today, Iqbal makes a successful living as a seamstress who also takes orders from abroad. She also manages to do this thanks to Caritas Czech Republic
