Mediation and Peaceful Resolution of House-Land-Property Disputes

Full name of project: Mediation and peaceful resolution of house-land-property disputes in Telkeif and Al Hamdaniya, Nineveh governorate

  • Project duration: July 2019 - February 2020
  • Description: One of the issues caused by the recent period of violence in Iraq are numerous land or property disputes brought up by the lack of documentation and complicated socio-economic circumstances of many families. In this project, CCR hired an international certified mediator to train 14 local mediators on identifying and addressing house, land and property (HLP) disputes among local families in the districts of Al Hamdaniyeh and Telkeif in Nineveh. Mediation is one of the alternative dispute resolution mechanisms which is widely used around the globe. The field mediators successfully addressed 356 HLP dispute cases. This gave the population in Nineveh Plains, including different minorities, the opportunity to enhance HLP rights. It aimed not only at resolving identified disputes, but it also strived to build a robust community-based structure for HLP dispute resolution with the involvement of various community structures (familial, customary and administrative).
