Some IDPs in Duhok live in abandoned and unfinished houses which make their lives more difficult than they already are, especially when the weather conditions drastically change; it is too hot in the summer, and too cold in the winter.
Living in a well-constructed house is essential as it makes them feel more secure, safer, and protects them from the high and low temperature.
Jamil, 46 years old, is a father of six children taking care of them along with his wife. They were all displaced from their hometown Shingal to Khanke with their neighbors in August 2014. Khanke was the area where they felt safe enough to stay and live in until the war stopped. No matter how poor the houses they chose to live in were, their only concerns were safety and security, and be united as a family living under one roof.
The family of Jamil has been living in an abandoned and unfinished house for a while now. There are many very essential things they lack to be surviving the harsh conditions.
During the distribution of non-food items that CCR did, they were provided with mattresses, blankets, kitchen set, jerrycans, kerosene cooker and solar lamp. He says ‘We use all of the items, especially the mattresses.’ They find the items beneficial and necessary to have them available at home. He adds ‘The children needed the mattresses. They sleep on them.’ The most basic things were offered to them. They made a difference in their life, how they live and practice their daily routine life at home.
‘A huge change happened in our life, because we need them.’
Jamil also mentions that what made him feel comfortable while being handed in the items was that the distribution team was treating them in a good and respectful way, ‘The distribution team was [dealing in a] very good [way] with the beneficiaries while distributing the items.’
The project started in October with great funds from IHF and UNHCR, and is planned to finalized it late July.. It is implemented in both of Duhok, KRI and Salah il Deen, GoI. There are around 25,512 of the affected people benefitting from it. It offers them different essential non-food items and sealing-off kits to provide them with the basics of what makes them enjoy good quality life.
