Many vital items are needed for easier and more practical life

A high number of IDPs, refugees and returnees live in inadequate living conditions in Duhok as they live in unfinished houses in abandoned areas. It is their right to live in well-constructed houses where they feel protected, secure, and safe. It is also their right not to suffer from the severe weather conditions.

Shehab, 33 years old, lives with his wife and four children. They were living in Shingal before ISIS invaded it. In August 2014, they had to flee away. They walked to Syria, then moved to Khanke by trucks along with many other people. Their main concern was to find a safe place to stay and live in regardless how it looked like or how well-equipped it was.

Shehab and his family have been living in unfinished house in an abandoned area for a while now. They lack many essential items that make their life easier and more practical.
They are of the affected people who are registered to benefit from the NFIs distribution that CCR did. They were provided with mattresses, blankets, kitchen set, jerrycans, kerosene cooker and solar lamp. They find all the items useful and vital for them, especially the mattresses and jerrycans, he explains ‘We use the mattresses for sleeping, and jerrycans for oil.’
However, the mattresses are of the most useful items for them. They were in need of the basic things to be living more comfortably, he says ‘We needed them for so long. We did not have them.’

‘The mattresses are beneficial, we use them for sleeping.’

Shehab also states that he was feeling good and confident when he received the items as the distribution team treated him well, he says ‘The distribution team was very good and [everything] was organized.’

The project started in October with great funds from IHF and UNHCR, and is planned to finalized it late July. It is implemented in both of Duhok, KRI and Salah il Deen, GoI. There are around 25,512 of the affected people benefitting from it. It offers them different essential non-food items and sealing-off kits to provide them with the basics of what makes them enjoy good quality life.
