Hussam's story: How one training altered his career path from medicine to journalism

Hussam Khairy Khalil is a 28-year-old from the Iraqi town of Bashiqa where he lives with his family. Altough Hussam has a degree in pharmacy from the Medical Institute's Department of Pharmacy in Ninewa, he has always enjoyed working in the field of journalism and media. As it is difficult to find a job in the region, Hussam was happy to join a training course organized by Caritas Czech Republic and now has the essential skills needed to find a proper job.

Employment prospects and self-sufficiency can only be achieved by learning new skills.

Hussam was looking for related courses and training to further his career in journalism or marketing. He joined an employment training initiative for youth in Bashiqa, Nineveh, which we organized together with the UNDP and the Smithson Institute thanks to the funding from the Government of Japan.

The training included a five-day digital marketing course, part of a project aimed at young graduates and unemployed individuals in order to help them work and progress their careers, as well as strengthening local businesses and the region's economy, through the use of modern marketing and promotion techniques.

"I received training on how to sell items and market enterprises. Following the training, I was assigned to work with stores and small businesses in the region, as well as promote their products through financed advertisements and current methods of photography," Hussam explained.

"This is the region's first project in terms of training quality and how it will be implemented on the ground. This application will expand and develop experience while also assisting young people in obtaining decent careers, particularly young people like myself," he added.

Hussam enjoyed acquiring knowledge in the field of media and journalism, which also led to an increase in his income.

“After the area was liberated from ISIS and we returned to our home regions, we also had to face the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic which further reduced job options. The training came at the right time and was critical for us. We also hope that other projects will be launched in the future, particularly for young people, as they need an opportunity to develop and gain the essential skills to obtain acceptable employment," he added.

"I want to express my gratitude to the organization for giving these opportunities to young people and encouraging them to enroll in such courses because they will positively impact their lives."
