The primary healthcare center in Kabarto 1 camp stopped providing services and consultations to the IDPs after the government fund was cut. Many families suffered from the lack of adequate access to healthcare services as there was no other close center which they could reach easily and benefit from.
Ghazal, 43 years old, is a single mother who is responsible of six children. They had been displaced from their hometown during the war. The only place they had to stay in was Kabarto 1 camp in Sumel district, Duhok governorate. As a family, they needed a safe area to live in where they could have access to all what they need, such as healthcare services, schools, groceries… etc.
‘We have been receiving good healthcare services since we arrived in the camp,’ Ghazal says. The family did not have much money to offer for the medical services and consultations they needed; especially that she has children who get sick more than the adults as they play around with other children. Ghazal also states that she always chooses the center because it is the closest one to where she lives and offers free services no matter what kind of treatment, medicine or test they need. ‘It is the closest healthcare center to us. Plus, it offers free treatment and services,’ she says.
She also states that the center’s staff treat them very nicely and respectfully. She has never felt disrespected or humiliated in any way.
‘It has helped in improving our health situation.’
As the whole family has access to the free services and treatment, this has created positive difference in their life which also affected the social part of it. They can be treated whenever they feel sick and recover from whatever they suffer from; this allows them to interact normally with people and be cautious when they should be. ‘Having access to the healthcare services has impacted our life positively to the extent that our social life with our relatives and neighbors has improved.’
This project was implemented in partnership with Secours Catholique – Caritas France. There are around 14,000 IDPs who benefit from the provided services at the center. The center provides free clinical consultations, reproductive health services, laboratory tests and medical supplies to the IDPs who live in Kabarto 1 camp and other near camps.
